Okay you estimated 5 millions Americans who suffer from restless leg syndrom, you are not crazy and you are not imagining your condition.
News in the New England Journal of Medicine claim that your restless leg syndrom may be related to your genetic make up.
The study done by Icelandic researchers, found a genetic variation in 451 people suffering from RLS and compared it 514 relatives of these people.
They found one genetic variant in all subjects and this variant was is believed to increase periodic limb movements.
This genetic variant may also increase you chances of suffering from iron deficiency, kidney disease, diabetes, and neuropathy, which researchers have long believed to be related to RLS.
Yes, you can blame it on your ancestors. But is knowing that going to help you today? It may give you some comfort knowing it's not "all in your mind" as my wife has been told.
But let's be realistic, it will be some time before researchers can do anything useful with this information.
And, is this genetic link to restless leg syndrome the only cause of RLS?
My wife who suffers from RLS, has no record of anyone in her family ever having any RLS symptoms, or any sleep disorders. So, could there also be people who suffer from RLS for other reasons.
Who knows? That's one of the frustrating things about this condition - no one seems to know much about anything.
But the good news in this possible genetic RLS link is, hopefully now it will be recognized as a real medical condition, and some real research can take place to help those who suffer from restless leg syndrom.
For now, those who suffer from restless leg syndrom will have to deal with the RLS symptoms the best way they can.
